April is Prevent Child Abuse Month

“We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear.” - Nelson Mandela

Children are naturally vulnerable and expect us, the adults, to keep them safe. During their first developmental stage, Trust vs. Mistrust, children learn to trust based on how well their caregivers meet their basic needs and respond when they cry (Maryville University [APA], n.d.). Children will gain more trust in that caregiver as their needs are continually met. It’s when those needs are not met time and time again that children suffer from neglect. Neglect is a form of child abuse and can damage a child, similar to physical or sexual abuse.

Understanding child abuse, the why, and the who are questions we should begin to ask to understand better what we can do to prevent it. In their book Child Abuse, Prevention Through Understanding, Evan M. Daly and John E. Wright answer these questions and examine how we, the adults, can keep our children safe. Child abuse isn’t an individual family problem; it’s a societal problem that we must all try to prevent.
